Rather than have a webcam or have another page on the website, we are going to put a new pic of the field up here every day starting today.<br />The 2011 bloom should be interesting - its late, and the weather is cool, and the flowers should last longer than usual - so come back often and see what the field looks like. Our most asked question is "When does it bloom"?<br /><br />The answer for the next few weeks is "NOW!"Clairmont Farmshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15464235843565903508noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8221684834375819970.post-8184382427604102382010-07-28T15:41:00.000-07:002010-07-28T20:10:17.051-07:00This post will be mostly just about pictures - maybe we'll add some words later - but this is a special time visually.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGQWhncfgFlD5ssJhpaht3i9UHU9bSdWcMhsl1d2hfpMA5TYm7Xgyo-xZYqVgLLVPhHlArk3eC8StBFNk9jOgH1Eyr9Jh2H8QBc0RKQtCMjTP2se-TXhV9KL3l1EmhO6Hmmn6a7cN3xM0/s1600/IMG_0198+copy.jpg"><img style="display: block; We are going to post a picture every day to this blog of some view of the field. MAybe we can even get a webcam out there, but these images will have better resolution. We have several things that are new to look at below :<br />A few pictures, a few videos and more coming. More on that below - here is a shot from yesterday of part of the field in the middle. We'd guess that there are about 5% or less of the flowers out yet. But the buds are SO BLUE it looks like its blooming already.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:180%;" ><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Y8UH-TLQpeHu6K_w7yOYtfbYCQ1Cfra5U3khNUpz68n4tJRhazm1638hMREMVdYL8LHsP80LjuhwZ4qOHPxf1-BdO9-IRLG16S6LDTiNdTxy5NwSIIVI6hBPt3l5xdrjDJ8dXEflR1U/s1600/2010bloom.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3Y8UH-TLQpeHu6K_w7yOYtfbYCQ1Cfra5U3khNUpz68n4tJRhazm1638hMREMVdYL8LHsP80LjuhwZ4qOHPxf1-BdO9-IRLG16S6LDTiNdTxy5NwSIIVI6hBPt3l5xdrjDJ8dXEflR1U/s400/2010bloom.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5485307585877689314" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">VIDEOS</span></span><br /><br />It seems to be the new medium these days so we are going to do a few and expand. This is Brenda who hatched the babies in the previous posts. The rooster with her is one that hatched from one of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Tweety's</span> eggs in June.<br />We had been hoping for a hen, but ....... "LT" or Little <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Tweety</span> is very personable and likes attention. he rides in the car like <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Tweety</span> and has made friends at the same feed store that she has. Glenn took him to a local event last week, and he sat on Glenn's arm through Glenn's whole talk. He will let strangers pet him, but he's not too comfortable sitting on their ARMS.<br /><br />LT seeks Brenda out during the day and she him as well. There are 3 hens from the brood of 8, and they hang with him too during the day. He makes passes at some of the hens but Talkie <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">doesn't</span> put up with much of that. In fact LT had quite a bite on his comb and was bleeding a little. Talkie got him.<br /><br />Below is a shot taken of LT when he was just a little guy. He is the one up on the hen's back. There were only 3 in that brood, and he was marked a lot differently than the other two. They were a lot more shy, too. The other two looked like identical twins, and <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">we called</span> them "The Rooster Brothers". They went to live with one of the ladies from the local feed store.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSYvMsmc7iJuNMILJcsr_jmT7nwNFhFG7zDV-aAMPfjNA5N_dmhzv3QxYkeUSvl_eQXRCJxw3wszAUNxOsHg9sXGgdZNqLxyO_ryS9dpeZ4JeNRW0PE5NmKJfTQg3rVRw3DJI9nGOR1nM/s1600-h/ltbabypic.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 350px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSYvMsmc7iJuNMILJcsr_jmT7nwNFhFG7zDV-aAMPfjNA5N_dmhzv3QxYkeUSvl_eQXRCJxw3wszAUNxOsHg9sXGgdZNqLxyO_ryS9dpeZ4JeNRW0PE5NmKJfTQg3rVRw3DJI9nGOR1nM/s400/ltbabypic.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433501303363270562" border="0" /></a><br />Here is a shot of the two nest mates just before they got <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">their</span> new <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">diggs</span>.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPTaLpEdZvrjDS7ZcArDY0hrm0gH5dQTUoLrqmDSPb-sK0r8Y-5xQk8gY1ewtPsQekncl_x0dlYArp7YPTHdeVIqRKpG38mKPVgOi37nna4vbTuNlsRUFousb2TJBdSZYomdeDKAsSjM4/s1600-h/ROOSTERBROTHERS.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 314px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPTaLpEdZvrjDS7ZcArDY0hrm0gH5dQTUoLrqmDSPb-sK0r8Y-5xQk8gY1ewtPsQekncl_x0dlYArp7YPTHdeVIqRKpG38mKPVgOi37nna4vbTuNlsRUFousb2TJBdSZYomdeDKAsSjM4/s400/ROOSTERBROTHERS.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433503277359850930" border="0" /></a>They grow very fast, don't they? The baby shot was taken Aug 11, and this one was taken in December only a <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">little</span> more than 4 months later.<br /><br />We have worked pretty hard to make sure that none of these guys wing up in the <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">stew pot</span> or fighting. We call him "Talkie" because he talks all day long as he hangs out with and chases the hens.<br /><br />We almost lost him last week. He was acting strangely. Chickens are actually pretty fragile, and you have to pay close attention to them. If they get sick, its almost always too late to help them by the time their symptoms are noticed.<br /><br />When we upended him to check him out, he had two infected and maggot infested wounds.<br />Probably the result of a <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">raccoon</span> or possibly a possum. It was a mess. Glenn cleaned him up and then the local vet cleaned him up a lot better and gave him some antibiotics<br /><br />While chickens (and other birds) get worse very fast, they also get better very fast. In just a day Talkie was back crowing and eating, and in a couple of days he was back outside with his girls (who missed him by the way). After four days he was allowed to stay back in the hen house overnight.<br /><br />We were really happy that he got better. His crowing around the farm has really become part of<br />the day and he would have been missed. If they are missing and we can't find them, its a serious problem and we have lost favorite hens this way.<br /><br />One night Brenda didn't come back to the hen house, and it took us a day to find her. We followed her after she came in mid morning to eat and drink. We followed her back to this burn pile.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAeCRtp38kIW2zvxWCTx1TuezTI5Td8HsG2_qj8Bfx10DPU3MoDXG0Ihv_5cpvVTzDG1kI61fcGkrInW552mFSGiWFCsN_LdpdqUW9AyZUxOdOBlE85ac9h0-ZwBOgm2FxACpMtXVqfYI/s1600/brendasburnpile.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 202px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAeCRtp38kIW2zvxWCTx1TuezTI5Td8HsG2_qj8Bfx10DPU3MoDXG0Ihv_5cpvVTzDG1kI61fcGkrInW552mFSGiWFCsN_LdpdqUW9AyZUxOdOBlE85ac9h0-ZwBOgm2FxACpMtXVqfYI/s320/brendasburnpile.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405567158780103762" border="0" /></a><br />The pile was pretty big after not being able to burn after a whole summer of tree trimming. The pile was about 10 yards wide by 30 yards long. After we followed her we found that she was sitting on a nest with 8 eggs in it.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Bv966Kcj60BiChHSoUkw6HNkY-HXzfBSio1mxrCFPzogsx6OKuzTsNqP2gex5GlPoqzCvrmW5pjwl2RwynU-IpDX-Buquy_j03HZmRwEwHA2f0L73Ib_j7l7jYxv0RulnIOhyphenhyphenYFrQA4/s1600/brendaweggs.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5Bv966Kcj60BiChHSoUkw6HNkY-HXzfBSio1mxrCFPzogsx6OKuzTsNqP2gex5GlPoqzCvrmW5pjwl2RwynU-IpDX-Buquy_j03HZmRwEwHA2f0L73Ib_j7l7jYxv0RulnIOhyphenhyphenYFrQA4/s320/brendaweggs.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405568103017467234" border="0" /></a><br />Temperatures were getting above 100 in late September out where Brenda was. We parked the truck right next to the nest and at night we left a light on with a low wattage bulb to keep the predators away. One morning we came out and found a few heads peeking out at us.<br /><br />When everybody was out of their eggs we moved them all into the barn where we could shut the door and keep them safe. It was also cooler in the middle of the day when the Sun was strong.<br /><br />Here is Brenda in the barn with her new brood.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE7OSbWJomZq92ubDIbjo1mIkLaFNkAV797ZSsdaCfqu24tNDTQdQub8pupIq4tAOzdHewlu9Ea3qd5JItRjLYbt_a-V10pQx2TuedzSssczb9EptbCcfroWeQbM3xlfmblAtuzWXhhvA/s1600/brendaand8babies.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 306px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE7OSbWJomZq92ubDIbjo1mIkLaFNkAV797ZSsdaCfqu24tNDTQdQub8pupIq4tAOzdHewlu9Ea3qd5JItRjLYbt_a-V10pQx2TuedzSssczb9EptbCcfroWeQbM3xlfmblAtuzWXhhvA/s320/brendaand8babies.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405569096471176930" border="0" /></a><br />One of the things that is very important with free ranging chickens is to keep them safe from hawks and other predators. For this reason Brenda and the babies stayed in the barn for a couple of weeks after they moved in from the burn pile.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJddP1BHe5FoJ2VgrwH_MmHHowriCSxlf4sE0H1p4VWbp4dwftlOBNvG_J4p_JE6NC00rTkN_FADB-blrfImwUcJqGE6i6-YikOTLF7XBcGTaiEzoqItE9hRGhVV2EHLso3lnKld9FwIY/s1600/brendand8bigger.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 201px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJddP1BHe5FoJ2VgrwH_MmHHowriCSxlf4sE0H1p4VWbp4dwftlOBNvG_J4p_JE6NC00rTkN_FADB-blrfImwUcJqGE6i6-YikOTLF7XBcGTaiEzoqItE9hRGhVV2EHLso3lnKld9FwIY/s320/brendand8bigger.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405570147888947010" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Even now that they are older Brenda and all the babies still sleep together. Chickens always go to the same place to roost at dusk. Most of ours go to the hen house, and some to a hedge by the hen house and we have to take them inside. Brenda and her babies go to the stall in the barn where the babies were raised. One of the other hens had three chicks and she abandoned them at about two months of age and started going back to the hen house. Brenda might do that someday but she shows no signs of it yet.<br /><br />Brenda is looking a little crowded here.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX5JlEzhAGyCBRuwDdw3aSZohES9ve4dT8yz7TCXAJKRh7eWY8Qyuzy_sicdFb05OX9JsdPwUn0m2lmDYBpjNN3n22jl8ZB86kDJPw8XUaTwHmXsLbenE9acDQkL3PJXh782qit1XVKEc/s1600/brenda8biggeryet.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX5JlEzhAGyCBRuwDdw3aSZohES9ve4dT8yz7TCXAJKRh7eWY8Qyuzy_sicdFb05OX9JsdPwUn0m2lmDYBpjNN3n22jl8ZB86kDJPw8XUaTwHmXsLbenE9acDQkL3PJXh782qit1XVKEc/s320/brenda8biggeryet.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405572155490602514" border="0" /></a><br />So keep an eye on this blog and we will make a few posts about Brenda and the Babies as they grow.
